New brand – Candidly Elegant is NOW Soul Echo Studios

I have been photographing weddings under the name Candidly Elegant Photography for the past 7 years. Since that time the business has grown tremendously and changed in many ways. I went from photographing a handful of weddings in 2005 and 2006 to photographing an average of 30-35 weddings a year since then. At this point I’ve photographed about 200 weddings and I have loved all my experiences with all the amazing couples. My vision for my company has not changed really; to capture the moments of a wedding day with little to no intervention so as to respect the authenticity of the emotion and tell a complete visual story of the wedding. The name Candidly Elegant seemed to fit the bill at that point in time. Over the years a few things started to bother me.

1. The name sounded old fashioned, while my images were (are) very modern.
2. The name was hard to pronounce and hard to spell.
3. The name was being confused for other companies that have the word “elegant” or “candid” in the name. There are 100s of these companies and I did not want to associate myself with any of them.

Many people told me to name the business after myself and that is definitely something I considered, but again…that’s the easy way out. That’s what everyone else does. I also don’t want to be the focus of the name. Its not about me. I am here to serve my clients. I don’t want to be the center of the universe. I wanted a name that would reflect my vision and not be about me. I wanted a name that would be:

1. Modern and fresh
2. Short
3. Easy to say
4. Easy to spell

In thinking about the vision of my photographs, I wanted to convey the authenticity of the moment. I wanted to capture what the soul is trying to say. I hired a branding company to help me. Their name is Brazen, they did an awesome job. I got stuck with this idea of “soul speak” and started discussing it with my branding company. After many weeks of looking at dictionaries, thesauruses, brain mapping, brain storms, calling people we came up with the name Soul Echo Studios. Here is the new logo:

This has been a long, hard journey. I pray the company will be as blessed (or more blessed) as it was with the previous name. Thank you to all my past clients for your support and thank you to all the new clients to come.

Love to all,

Alex

Engagement session in Las Olas Fort Lauderdale – Amanda and Gabryel

From the moment I met Amanda and Gabryel they already knew what they wanted to do for their engagement session. They love Las Olas blvd and they wanted some pictures at a French café’. The Café’ De Paris happens to be where Amanda and Gabryel will be hosting their rehearsal dinner and they were gracious enough to let us take some pictures there for their engagement.

Irma and Alex – Wedding at The Hilton Beach Resort in Las Olas, Fort Lauderdale

I’ve been looking forward to this wedding. Irma and Alex are some of the most welcoming people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I do everything in my power to stay invisible throughout the day and have a low key presence but they constantly seek me out and make sure that I’m doing well and have everything I need. They are beautiful people and I was so happy to capture all of the emotions of this day.

Yes, those are “Dude” and “Sweet” shirts. The best man for the wedding had special shirts made for him and the groom based on an inside joke from the movie “Dude Where’s My Car”.

Because of make-up we were running over 30 minutes late, yet Irma was cool and calm. She got in the limo and I followed behind on our way to the ceremony. Of course the bridge was up.

The wedding ceremony took place in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale just a few miles from the Hilton Beach Resort on Las Olas. I love to capture people’s un-hidden emotions. Both Irma and Alex had misty eyed moments during the ceremony.

Irma and Alex wanted some fun pictures of hanging out with the bridal party so we went to nearby Riverfront, which is one of my favorite places to shoot. We had a blast just walking around cracking jokes. There was more than one comedian in this bridal party to keep us all laughing.

The wedding reception took place back at the Hilton Beach Resort. Irma and Alex did a spectacular job picking out colors and vendors to decorate the place.

Marie and Danny – Destination wedding in Islamorada in the Florida Keys

I had the pleasure of meeting Marie and Danny for the first time on Saturday, November 19th, their wedding day. Marie planned the whole wedding from New York and I must say she did a spectacular job of it because it turned out beautiful.

I met Marie at her cottage in Cheeka Lodge where she was getting ready. Her bridesmaids, mom and grandmother were there with her and the whole room was giddy with anticipation. You could tell the bonds of friendship in this group went deep.

Marie and Danny opted to do a first look prior to the ceremony because they wanted to be with their guests and family during cocktail hour. I went downstairs to place Danny in the “first look” area. That was my very first conversation with Danny. “Danny, do you know what you are about to do?” Danny responded, “No idea.” I said, “you are about to see your beautiful bride for the first time. Are you ready?” You could see the emotion set into his eyes. The reality of this just set in.

The ceremony and reception took place at Pierre’s restaurant in Islamorada, a gorgeous plantation style house on the beach. The day was perfect for this wedding.

Michelle and Gabriel – wedding at the Addison in Boca Raton, Florida

For Michelle, it’s all about the details. This wedding was carefully planned and thought about from beginning to end. The décor, dress, ideas, and philosophy behind the day came together beautifully. She is the kind of person that values the little things and makes sure they are present on her day. This was a celebration of love and the joining of two families. At one point during the day she told me how important unity was in her family and she wanted to show that in the pictures. That stayed with me throughout the night. I really enjoyed working with this couple.

Michelle loves vintage décor but also likes to incorporate modern touches. Very unique. Michelle got ready at the Boca Beach Resort in Boca Raton, Florida.

Michelle and Gabriel decided to do a first look prior to the ceremony so that we can get portraits done with plenty of time and no guests waiting. The staircase of the Boca Beach Resort provided a beautiful and quiet area where they could meet. As we waited for Michelle, Gabriel said to me, “my heart is about to beat out of my chest.”

Kristin and Chris – engagement session in Las Olas Riverfront, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Planning a wedding can take a lot of effort. Sometimes in the course of events leading up to the day, all the details can overwhelm the couple. I did not get a chance to meet up with Kristin and Chris before our session but after finding out that they lived around the Fort Laurderdale Riverfront area we agreed it would be a great spot to just walk around and have a casual session. Couples sometimes feel they need to swing for the fences but any area that is special to you both, or where you will feel relaxed and at ease with each other is perfect.

When Kristin and Chris arrived I sensed they were a bit tense. So instead of jumping into the shoot right away we spent some time getting to know each other so I could put them at ease. Kristin was worried about taking cheesy pictures, but once the session got started Kristin and Chris were awesome. They were relaxed, having a good time, and totally in love with each other. We walked around Riverfront for a bit and then ended the session on Las Olas before the sun set.

Jessica and Greg – the perfect wedding in Downtown Miami’s Bank of America Tower

I’ve really grown fond of this couple. Super nice, super humble, just nice people be with and they had the perfect wedding. This wedding was perfect NOT because nothing went wrong, quite the opposite, a few things did go as unexpected, but it was perfect because of Jessica’s reaction when things didn’t go as planned. As I’ve said before, you can tell a LOT about a person when things don’t go as planned. There were a few hiccups during the day that would cause quite some stress for many people, but I was impressed to see that Jessica was not phased.

Hiccup number 1. The getting ready process went 45 minutes past schedule. I wanted to explain how we handled it, or more importantly how Jessica handled it. We were supposed to do a first look in the hotel at 3:15. That means the bride had to be in her dress by 3. The plan was to do the first look in the lobby of the W Hotel in South beach, then bride and groom portraits, then bridal party portraits, then family portraits so that basically all portraits would be done prior to the ceremony. We planned it this way so that Jessica and Greg could be part of the cocktail hour without having to do any more pictures. The problem came when I looked at my watch and saw that it was 3:45 and Jessica was still doing make up. I put on my happy, “let me be a voice of comfort” face and looked at Jessica. “What if we just do a first look and one or two portraits of just the two of you and we do the rest after the ceremony?”, I asked trying to offer a solution to the time crunch. She smiled and said, “perfect”. That’s when I knew, this was the perfect wedding.

Jessica got ready at South Beach, Miami’s W hotel.

As my assistant and I walk into the Bank of America Tower, we are informed of hiccup #2. Two of Jessica’s friends, a groomsman and a bridesmaid, got in a car accident on the way to the Bank of America. Big hiccup. They were both fine and not hurt, so that was a huge blessing, but you can see how this can stress out a bride. Not Jessica. Once she knew her friends were ok, we waited for them and proceeded with the ceremony. I am so impressed with her character.

The ceremony at Bank of America’s sky lobby terrace was gorgeous.

The reception took place inside the Bank of America’s Sky Lobby which has these beautiful floor to ceiling windows with a view of Downtown Miami. Tresha Titus did a fabulous job decorating the room to surpass Jessica’s expectations.

The day following the wedding, Jessica sends me this e-mail:

“Alex,

I just wanted to take time before we leave to our honeymoon to thank you for your wonderful work. Greg and I had a pleasure working with you. You have a special gift and I know great success is coming your way. From the beginning you saw our vision and you were able to create it. You were nothing but professional, kind, and overall a great character; you were a hit with my friends and family.

We are excited to see the grand finally, I expect nothing but great moments captured from one of the best days of our lives.

I wish you nothing but the best for you and your family. Have a great week and Happy Holidays, may god bless you.

Thanks a million,

Jessica and Greg”

Thank you, Jessica and Greg for the amazing day and your amazing attitude. Your wedding was perfect in every way!

Amanda and Joseph – Engagement session in Fort Lauderdale Beach

Fort Lauderdale beach, engagement shoot, motorcycle engagement shoot

I’ve been excited about working with Amanda and Joseph since the moment I met them. They are so relaxed and fun to be with. Amanda is studying law and Joseph writes fiction novels. How cool is that?

Joseph loves motorcycles and has driven them for many years. It didn’t take long for us to find some cool ideas for them to remember this time in their life.

We started off early in the morning to catch the sunrise on Fort Lauderdale beach.

We then hopped on the most gorgeous Harley Davidson bike I’ve seen for some awesome street shots.

I’ve never driven a motorcycle before, my wife would kill me, but I secretly have a man crush on Harleys. For now, I can live vicariously through Joseph and Amanda. For clothing, they decided to loosely base their wardrobe on James Dean and Marylin Monroe while still being true to themselves. I like that. I especially loved, Amanda’s 4 inch killer pumps and wanted to incorporate them into the shots.

Thank you Amanda and Joseph for the blast of a time taking pictures. I can’t wait for your wedding next year!

Tommy and Kristin – Rock the Dress

This may be a long blog post…Let me start of with one image so you will stick around for the read.

miami, trash the dress, downtown miami, .

I loooove trash the dress sessions. It’s a passion. I’ve been doing them since about 2007. It allows so much creativity and freedom to explore cool portrait ideas in a way that you could never do on the wedding day. That being said I recently read an article on a blog that has sort of changed my opinion on this movement. The article is from the popular blog, “The Offbeat Bride”. It’s an older article which I found while looking for fun ideas. You can read it here: Article

The writer makes the point that the trash the dress movement celebrates excess, where the bride is almost making a statement of “look at me destroy this $xxxx dress because I can!”, and then explains how these dresses could have been donated to charities or sold instead of being destroyed. Its not often that I am left in deep thought after reading a blog post but this one had me really soul searching.

“My brides aren’t destroying their dresses, we are making art!”, I thought to myself. I am not setting dresses on fire or shooting paint balls at them like other people do, we are just putting them in the ocean or around the streets. Not one of my brides’ dresses has been destroyed, but the writer still has a very valid point. I am calling the session a TRASH the dress session. Regardless of whether we destroy the dresses or not, the wording implies that a $xxxx dress = trash. That is the epitome of excess and I don’t want to be a part of it.

Thank you Offbeat Bride for making me take a look at myself and question why I do what I do. From now on I will call these sessions by the alternate name of Rock the Dress. I think that is more applicable and less wasteful-sounding. I am committed to doing some awesome artwork with these sessions but doing them in a way that is not wasteful or indulgent. Also, for all the brides reading this, I want you to know that there are charities you can donate your dress to after your wedding. There is an organization dedicated to raising money for breast cancer you can give your dress to here: Brides against breast cancer

So onto Kristin and Tommy. As some of you know, I have a BFA degree in motion picture film-making and I get a lot of my photography inspiration from movies. My passion is capturing moments as they happen but we are doing portraits where there is an opportunity for something outside the box, I like to look at movies for inspiration on lighting, mood, scenery and ideas. There is this old church in downtown Miami that has this cross on the steeple and I look at it often and when I see it, I picture Batman with his flowing cape against the night standing near it and watching over Gotham city. Yes, I’m a dork and I used to read comic books but I also love the Batman movies. Anyways, I then thought to myself, what if instead of Batman, we insert a bride with a long flowing white dress? YES! And insert a groom with bride! Awesome. Oh, and instead of Gotham City we’ll just do it in Miami.

I have had that thought swimming in my head for the past couple of years waiting for the right couple. Today was this day…

We then moved inside for some other cool portraits.

Kristin and Tommy, thank you for fulfilling my secret Batman fantasy and I hope you enjoy the images as much as I enjoyed taking them. Lots of love to you both.

November 2, 2011 - 2:19 pm Kristin - Alex: as always- stunning! Beautiful beautiful beautiful! Thank you for capturing us in such a creative way! The shoot definetly displays the true us! We love the name "Rock the Dress!" It more clearly explains the angle of how you shoot this type of session. Just fantastic! Thank you again Alex.

Irma and Alex – engagement session in South Beach Miami

I met Irma and Alex during Alex’s brother’s wedding this past April. Check out Ivelys and Adrian’s wedding here: Ivelys and Adrian I was so excited when I found out they were getting married too and felt honored to be hired by them.

Irma and Alex wanted some pictures by the water as well as street shots. They also wanted to bring their dog, Mason, to the pictures. South Beach Miami was the perfect location to incorporate these ideas. Mason stole my heart from the moment I met him. What a sweet dog! So glad he made the pictures!
